Last month, Memphis was blanketed in a sea of red as members of the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrated their 106th Founders Day.
The celebration, chaired by Demetria Monix-Goode, started with a REDception on Jan. 11, providing fun and fellowship with Deltas from Memphis Alumnae as well as Rhodes College, LeMoyne-Owen College and the University of Memphis.
A wealth of talent was on display from the performances by the MAC Executive Board (The MACettes); the MAC Stepping Divas; Ike, Tina Turner and the “Ikettes”; a sign language interpretation by past president Deborah Harris; and a testimonial. The speaker for the evening was Rhonda Briggins, national social action commission co-chair.
The next day, Jan. 12, was a Rededication Ceremony at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church to honor 22 Founders and to renew the alumnae’s commitment to the sorority.
Some of the program’s highlights included performances by the melodious Delta Voices Choir and a memorial skit, written by Delta Florence Roach, that focused on women’s rights and the community. During her speech, Briggins, an active member of the Decatur alumnae chapter, pressed each member to be vocal and intentional in the community and stand up for the injustices that black women face.
The weekend continued on Sunday, Jan. 13, as members rallied together at various churches throughout the city dressed in red, taking photos, posting on social media and showing their pride and dedication to strengthening their sisterhood.
The last event of the celebration was a Day of Service held at Ida B. Wells Academy on Jan. 19. Among the 13 agencies offering their services to the community were the Memphis Police Department, Agricenter International, University of Tennessee Dental School, Shelby County Election, Southwest Tennessee Community College, Memphis Area Legal Services and a clothes closet. The Day of Service event was emceed by Michael A. Davis, a local radio personality from Memphis’ 88.5 FM – The Voice of SCS.
