LENS & LINES: Renovation of Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital gets $100,000 boost from HCD

Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital, one of Memphis’ African-American landmarks, secured support for $100,000 in CIP funds during a Memphis City Council committee meeting Tuesday morning.

Paul Young, director of the City of Memphis’ Division of Housing and Community Development, made the presentation. Other funding agencies have pledged financial support for the completion of the $5 million renovation, which is currently underway at 409 Ayers Street.

The hospital, established during the height of racial segregation, was the only hospital where African-Americans could receive medical treatment in Memphis and the Mid-South.

The vote to back the funding was unanimous. CME Bishop Henry Williamson and other pastors and bishops attended the committee meeting and the City Council session Tuesday afternoon.
