Moneybagg Yo joins the back-to-school mix

The inaugural “Baggs 2 School Drive” puts local rapper Moneybagg Yo in the company of those lending helping hands to students, parents and guardians with the start of the school year on the horizon.

The entire city is invited to Moneybagg Yo’s event, which is set for 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 5) at Mitchell High School located at 658 Mitchell Rd.

Signed to Yo Gotti’s CMG record label, Moneybagg Yo – DeMario DeWayne White Jr. – will give away school supplies, along with hosting a concert that is expected to include a special guest.

The tunes, supplies, food and festivities are all free.

 Shelby County Schools hosts its Back to School Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Board of Education at 160 South Hollywood.

Proof of registration is required to participate in the fun. Register for school onsite.

The day will feature music from 88.5, free food, games and giveaways, backpacks and school supplies.

Immunizations will be available while supplies last.

F.F.U.N. rolls on with ‘Stop The Killing’ Back 2 School rally

F.F.U.N. (Freedom From Unnecessary Negatives) will hosts its 15th Annual Stop the Killing Back 2 School family and community initiative on Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gaston Park Community Center, 1046 S. Third St.

Doors open at 9 a.m. for registration, with the event sent for 10:30 a.m.

The goal is to serve 1,200 economically disadvantaged youth and their families with school supplies. A host of public officials are expected.

The event is free.

Back-to-School Oil Anointing set for The New Olivet

Pastor Dr. Kenneth T. Whalum Jr. and The New Olivet Worship Center will hold a Back-to-School Oil Anointing on Saturday (August 4) from 10 a.m. to noon.

All students, parents/guardians, teachers and school staff are welcome to receive oil anointing and prayer.

The New Olivet Worship Center is located at 10000 Woodland Hills Dr. in Cordova.

Partners in Unity Back to School Block Party

On Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., more than a dozen community partners, including The Memphis Lift, Chelsea Automart, Silent Partna Promotions, Whole Child Strategies and Shelby County Schools will host a school supply and backpack giveaway for students attending inner city schools.

Community members, school leaders, elected officials and education partners will participate in the event at the Chelsea Automart at 2109 Chelsea Ave. The day’s menu will also feature games and tournaments, rides and a live band. Enter to win door prizes.

At 2:45 p.m., Sarah Carpenter, executive director of The Memphis Lift, and The Memphis Lift Leadership Team will issue the group’s call for Unified Enrollment, followed by the backpack giveaway at 3 p.m.

 Crittenden County NAACP sponsors Back to School Bash, Health Fair

The Crittenden County NAACP is sponsoring a “Back To School Bash, And Health Fair” on Saturday (August 4) at the Agape Christian Center located at 1823 East Broadway in West Memphis. The time is 9 a.m. to noon.

Baptist Hospital will provide free health screenings and nutritional education. Refreshments will be served. Children will be able to enjoy face painting, balloon art, bouncy houses and more.

Partners in the event include the WMACC of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Agape Christian Center, Baptist Hospital and the Delta Initiative Project.

BRIEFLY: On August 4, the John Dustin Buckman Boys & Girls Club, 1100 N. Vollintine, will host a back to school block party and giveaway from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children can receive backpacks, supplies and face paintings, along with free haircuts or hairstyles. The Mommies with Motives organization, which is designed to empower, support and give mothers a chance to network, is the host group.

BRIEFLY: On August 4, Creative Life’s “Back 2 School Bash” will take place from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Creative Life Preparatory School, 1222 Riverside Blvd. Free school supplies and uniforms will be offered, along with food, bounce houses, face painting and other activities. Participants must register at the Eventbrite website. During the event, winners will be chosen for free tablets.
