WLOK set to take Black Film Festival into year three

The third annual WLOK Black Film Festival highlighting the black experience in American film begins its four-day run on Thursday, August 30.

The mix will include a series of movies created by local film makers.

Here’s the schedule:

  • Thursday, August 30 – New filmmakers’ presentation, 7 p.m., at Southwest Tennessee Community College, Downtown Campus;
  • Friday, August 31 – “Black Panther,” 7 p.m., The Memphis Pink Palace, preceded by a 6 p.m. red-carpet event;
  • Saturday, September 1 – “Coming to America,” 8 p.m., Memphis College of Art;
  • Sunday, September 2 – “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” 3 p.m., Malco Studio on the Square, followed by a discussion on domestic abuse;
  • Sunday, September 2 – “Selma,” 7 p.m., National Civil Rights Museum.

Participating films in the WLOK Black Film Festival are defined as films that either feature a black actor or actress in a leading role, a black film maker, or the film’s content focuses on the social significance of the black experience in America.

The Black Film Festival was launched three years ago to shed light on the creative talents of African-American film makers and actors as well as movies that focus public attention on the black experience through the artistic venue of film, said Art Gilliam, the president and chief executive officer of WLOK Radio and the Gilliam Foundation.

The WLOK Black Film Festival is held in conjunction with WLOK’s legendary Stone Soul Picnic, which will be held from noon until 7 p.m., Saturday, September 1, at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park.
