PREP FOOTBALL: Whitehaven wallops Cordova, 41-13

The Cordova Wolves wanted to continue their winning streak when they entered Friday’s game against Whitehaven with a 2-0 record.

But the Tigers had plans too: They wanted another chance to celebrate “Donuts Monday,” a reward given whenever Whitehaven holds an opponent scoreless.

Neither the Wolves’ winning streak nor Donuts Monday occurred as the Tigers defeated the Wolves 41-13 to remain undefeated 3-0. The Whitehaven front line was just too much for the smaller Wolves on both sides of the football. Wolves starting quarterback Austin Wiley was constantly under defensive pressure.

Whitehaven played without one of their best defensive players, junior linebacker Bryson Eason who injured his ankle last week in the win over Ridgeway. Junior linebacker Martavius French had to shoulder the load more in the absence of Eason. French finished with three tackles and an interception.

Tigers running back Cameron Sneed has become a breakout star this season. Sneed caught the game-winning touchdown last week against Ridgeway and rushed for 194 yards and a touchdown against Cordova.

Whitehaven fullback Joe Barrett Jr. only had three carries but two of those were for touchdowns. Andre Gooden rushed for 85 yards on only four carries and he also scored a touchdown.

Tigers QB Vincent Guy kept the Wolves off-balance. Guy rushed for a touchdown and completed a touchdown pass to Cormontae Hamilton. He completed 10 of his 18 attempts for 138 passing yards.

For Cordova, Wiley passed for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Falandis Norry was Wiley’s favorite target, catching five receptions for 72 yards, and he had one touchdown reception. Joshua Hastings had three receptions for 17 yards and had the other touchdown pass from Wiley.

“We did not come to play. A lot of guys laid down,” said Cordova Head Coach Marcus Wimberley. “We did not do a great job of coaching as well. I am going to put that one on me. Corrections are going to be made and we are going to be a much better team on down the line.”

Asked about Wiley’s play, Wimberley said, “He knew he had to go. We are already down a man and if he goes down, that is pretty much it as far as quarterback goes. He stood in there and was a warrior.”

Whitehaven Head Coach Rodney Saulsberry was happy to get the win, but still sees room for improvement.

“We still have some things we have to shore up. We still had a few penalties, but they are penalties of aggression,” Saulsberry said. “Guys were going hard. They were playing hard and giving their best efforts. There weren’t any dumb penalties.”

On the play of Sneed, Saulsberry said, “I don’t think he gets enough credit for the great back that he is. He is an ultra-talented kid. We are blessed to have a great group of talented kids all around him. Cameron Sneed is one of the best running backs that we have seen. He is dynamic in and out of cuts. He has the speed to turn it on and he has some great guys behind him pushing him as well.”

Cordova looks to get back on the winning track when they host Douglass on Friday at Wolf-pack Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile Whitehaven will face the Lausanne Lynx led by Eric Gray, considered one of the best running backs in the state. Whitehaven is seeking some payback for Lausanne snapping the Tigers’ 17-game, home-winning streak last season with a 14-7 win.

The Whitehaven-Lausanne game was originally slated to be played on Thursday but was moved to Friday at 7 p.m., and will be played at Rhodes College.
