BITS & PIECES: Karl Dean to speak with clergy today; Bridge named for Albert M. King;

Just so you know, here are a couple of things we thought you should know about:

KARL DEAN TO HOST FORUM WITH MEMPHIS CLERGY TODAY:

At 1:30 p.m. today, Democratic candidate for Tennessee Governor Karl Dean will speak with more than 130 Memphis-area pastors at the Memphis Christian Pastor Network Forum. The forum will be at Hope Presbyterian Church, 8500 Walnut Grove Road in Memphis.

Earlier in the day, Dean was scheduled to make stops in Jackson, Tenn., including a rural West Tennessee roundtable with African-American elected officials and community leaders including State Rep. Johnny Shaw. Before coming to Memphis, Dean was set to visit New Life Medical Group, a pain clinic that uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy to combat opioid addiction.

BRIDGE TO BE NAMED FOR FORMER REP. ALBERT M. KING: 

State Representative G. A. Hardaway will honor former State Rep. Alvin M. King this morning at the naming of a bridge in his honor.  Rep. King passed away in 2009.

At the time of his death, he was the third-longest serving African-American in the history of the Tennessee Legislature.  The “Alvin M. King Memorial Bridge” is located on East Parkway South crossing Southern Avenue.  Rep. Hardaway praised King as a “dedicated and exemplary public servant who served with a priceless sense of commitment to the people of his district and to the Democratic Institutions.”

King served in the state House from 1968 to 1992, including serving as chair of the Government Operations committee.  Members of King’s family will attend the dedication ceremony, which will be held TODAY, September 17th at 10:00 AM at the bridge site.
