It’s been a year.

On Oct. 22, 2017, Bernal E. Smith II, former publisher of The New Tri-State Defender, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 45. Since then, alongside the tears, there has been an outpouring of the very principles he made a part of the fabric of the newspaper: Information. Inspiration. Elevation.

Saturday evening at dusk, just before the start of the 2018 Best In Black Awards, Bernal’s family – widow Towanda, flanked by their children – were joined by the Board of Directors of The New Tri-State Defender and BIB guests and honorees for a brief ceremony at the I AM A MAN Plaza at Clayborn Temple.

And then, balloons . . .
