Grizzlies win streak swells to four with 98-88 win over Dallas Mavericks

Despite the Grizzlies’ 10-5 record on Monday morning, ESPN’s Power Rankings had them at No. 11 — behind flashier teams like Houston and OKC, despite their middling records.

But after Memphis’ 98-88 win over the Dallas Mavericks, the home team is now tied for the top spot in the Western Conference. Sure, it’s early. Sure, it probably won’t last. But for now, the Grizzlies’ against-the-grain style of play – built around their trademark stifling defense – is wreaking havoc on the league. And it’s darn fun to watch too.

Mike Conley led all scorers with 29 points, including seven three pointers, to go with seven assists, five boards and two steals. Marc Gasol had an amazing game as well, with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Three other Grizzlies scored in double figures, including a stat-stuffing night from JaMychal Green. Green, who was last seen at FedExForum after suffering a broken jaw in the home opener, exploded for 12 points and nine boards in just 15 minutes off the bench.

But more than that, it’s clear that these Grizzlies, much like their “Core Four” predecessors, LOVES playing defense. In his remarks below, Grizzlies Head Coach JB Bickerstaff brags about how well and how thoroughly his team has bought in on its hard-nosed style. And with a four-game winning streak, it’s hard to argue with the results.
