‘Breast Cancer 901: Community Report’ set for release

The Common Table Health Alliance (CTHA) and the Memphis Breast Cancer Consortium (MBCC) this week will release “Breast Cancer 901: Community Wide Report” – a first of its kind report.

It will provide insight gathered from a recently completed survey of mammogram facilities in the Memphis area.

Important information about disparities, mortality rates, quality of care, utilization of available breast health care services as well as identifying the zip codes most impacted by breast cancer and the existing disparity gaps will be disseminated.

Recommendations of what health care providers and the community can do to improve outcomes will also be discussed. The event is open to the public.

Guest speakers include:

  • Monique Anthony, MPH, CHES – Director of Minority Health and Disparities and Elimination, Division of Health Disparities Tennessee Department of Health
  • Gregory Vidal, MD, PhD – West Cancer Center
  • Jennifer Kmet, Senior Epidemiologist, Shelby County Health Department

The report will be released on December 13 between 10 a.m. and noon at the Double Tree Hotel Memphis, 5069 Sanderlin Ave.

Nationally, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women after lung cancer. Locally, every zip code in Shelby County has a higher breast cancer mortality rate than the national average.

Only 60 percent of women ages 40-64 in Shelby County are getting recommended mammograms. While the disparity and mortality rates have slightly improved recently, the rates remain at alarming levels compared to national rates.
