Kwanzaa in Memphis: Kuumba (creativity) observance to accent day 6

Kuumba (creativity) — the sixth principle in the Nguzo Saba — will be celebrated at the Java Complex, 1423 Elvis Presley Blvd., as the 2018-19 observance of Kwanzaa continues on Monday evening (Dec. 31).

The Mid-South Kwanzaa, Inc. celebration of Kuumba is sponsored by Johari Brittenum.

Kwanzaa is a seven-day festival centered on the Nguzo Saba (seven principles). The principles are: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith).

The celebration is punctuated with music, fellowship, dance, poetry, narratives, African attire, African food and more.

Mid-South Kwanzaa, Inc.’s Imani observance will be at 3 p.m. on New Year’s Day at the New Chicago Performing Arts Center, 1036 Firestone Ave.

TSD freelance journalist Tyrone P. Easley has been capturing some of the images from this year’s Kwanzaa observance.
