Briefs and Things: The Memphis (TN) Chapter of the Links, Inc. to celebrate 65th Anniversary

The Memphis (TN) Chapter of the Links, Inc. to celebrate 65th Anniversary

The Memphis (TN) Chapter of the Links, Inc., the “Grand Dame” of Tennessee Link Chapters, will celebrate 65 years of community service on October 7.

Accented by a “jubilant and exuberant party,” the celebration will feature Memphis’ own, The Bar-Kays, and is set to begin at 6 p.m. at The Guest House at Graceland.

The Memphis Links is the oldest Links Chapter in Tennessee as well as the Deep South.

The venerable group’s history is punctuated by a legacy of training and presenting young women to the “Memphis Society.” It has sponsored numerous community service projects and special events and has contributed to various service agencies and educational institutions.

SCS nets national salute for oversight of schoolchildren

Shelby County Schools has received a national award for its oversight of public education for schoolchildren.

SCS was singled out for excellence as an urban school board by the National School Boards Association’s Council of Urban Boards of Education, or CUBE. It joined Pennsylvania’s Pittsburgh Public Schools and Texas’ Lancaster Independent School District for the 2017 honors.

Supt. Dorsey Hopson and several board members recently accepted the award during the council’s annual conference in New Orleans.

Shelby County’s board has provided oversight to Memphis schools during a period of unprecedented upheaval, including the historic 2013 merger of city and county schools and the subsequent exodus of six suburban towns that created their own school systems. In that widening school-choice climate, which also includes annual expansion of the state-run turnaround district since 2012, Memphis school leaders have sought to spearhead academic growth while also stemming enrollment losses.

The district will receive $2,500 and will be featured in the American School Board Journal.
