Volunteer Memphis seeking volunteers for MLK Days of Service

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Volunteer Memphis and Leadership Memphis are hosting their third annual MLK Days of Service weekend.

There will be multiple service projects throughout the weekend of Jan. 18-21 to commemorate Dr. King’s life and legacy.

Volunteer Memphis hopes to bring together volunteers from all across the mid-south during the service weekend.

“Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live,” said Andrea Hill, Director of Volunteer Memphis.

“MLK Days of Service are a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems by empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and bridging barriers.”

For the 2019 weekend, each day of service has a specific theme with the first day Friday, Jan. 18 being Youth and Education Day. Service projects on this day will cater to the youth and education programs.

Saturday the 19 is an opportunity for individuals to serve along side their family and friends. There will be service projects for people of all ages on Family and Friends day. Sunday Jan. 20 has been labeled Service Sunday; those who want to volunteer are asked to work with local churches or community centers. The theme for Monday, Jan. 21, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, is Community Clean Up.

There are multiple service projects happening on each day for individuals who wish to volunteer. Registration may be required for some projects.

If you are interested in helping but not able to attend a service project there is still a way to participate. Community partners are accepting supplies for the MLK Day of Service Donation Drive until Jan. 17, 2019. A list of community partners, donation recipients, and supplies can be found on the Volunteer Memphis website.
