It’s the fourth time around for Memphis Black Restaurant Week and the menu –a week of soul-satisfying dining experiences – is well known to many.

And for those just getting up to speed on the local foodie’s paradise week, well, the first time around should be a delightful adventure.

Memphis Black Restaurant Week (MBRW) 2019 starts Sunday March 3 and runs through Saturday, March 9.

As is part for the course, MBRW promotes eateries owned and operated by African Americans. It’s straight from the creative mind of entrepreneur Cynthia Daniels.

The idea Daniels and MBRW promote is this: Expose Memphis to an array of black-owned dining experiences in the city while generating an economic boost for small-business owners.

“Over the past three years, a total of 35 restaurants were featured, bringing in a total of $575,000 in during the weekly sales and created 160 jobs. The City of Memphis – Office of Business Diversity & Compliance serves as the Title Sponsor of MBRW and will be working with restaurateurs to provide employment resources and training as we prepare for our largest week to date,” said Daniels.

By self-description, MBRW “aims to counter economic disparity with fun and interactive solutions that engage, excite and ignite a deeper understanding and love of Memphis food culture while encouraging agency in the future of the city.”

A millennial-led effort, MBRW provides minority-owned restaurants with marketing opportunities that are “otherwise cost restrictive with a goal promoting Memphis food tourism and multi-cultural engagement.

The Four Way, the iconic South Memphis restaurant that counts Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. among those to have eaten there, has joined the MBRW lineup for 2019, adding its flavor to an already substantive variety of specialties and cuisines.

The Office @ Uptown, a veteran MBRW participant, is back; as is Chef Tam’s. Bluff City Crab and Sage, a soul food fusion restaurant, are making their debuts Sage. Six of participating restaurants are newcomers that have been open less than one year.
