THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW: Herenton sets campaign kickoff

In a notice describing him as an “activist, educator and former mayor,” the mayoral campaign of Dr. W.W. Herenton has announced the April 6 launch of his bid to “return proven leadership” to city governance.

The campaign-launch event is set for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 3356 South 3rd Street and next to the old Crystal Palace skating rink.

“We will register voters and sign up volunteers, but most importantly, ‘Doc’ will outline his campaign platform,” a release for the event details.

Dr. Herenton is the longest serving mayor in the city’s history. His campaign is pitching him as “the most transformative mayor in the history of Memphis” in an effort to unseat incumbent Jim Strickland and turn back the election bid of Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer.

Seeking to make the case for a history of transformation, the Herenton campaign asserts that his administration “reshaped the city skyline, reduced crime and blight, and altered the trajectory of the lives of countless Memphians by giving them a second chance.

“Broad-based economic growth, a feature of his time in office, was only possible because of the support from people who call Memphis home. We’re asking those same folks to come down … to help us ‘do it again.’”
