The City of Memphis ranks No. 1 in the nation for completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and Graduate Memphis is working to maintain that ranking.
The local organization and its partners are sponsoring events that offer assistance filling out the FAFSA and building awareness of the financial aid opportunities for students planning to attend college in the fall 2018.
Graduate Memphis needs at least 150 volunteers to assist with the Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Service on January 12-15, 2018, and FAFSA Goal Sunday, January 14, 2018. On Friday, teams will canvas neighborhoods with flyers targeting high school seniors to complete the application. Workshops at high schools and organizations will also take place that day. On January 14, churches across Memphis and Shelby County will participate in FAFSA Goal Sunday to assist their graduating seniors with completing the FAFSA.
“We are proud of Memphis’ No. 1 ranking for FAFSA completion,” said Senior Director of Graduate Memphis Renee McCreight.
“We can’t stop there though. All financial aid opportunities begin with the FAFSA – even scholarships. We don’t want Memphians missing out on opportunities for aid because they did not fill out the application.”
Completion of the FAFSA by January 16, 2018 is also a requirement for the Tennessee Promise Scholarship as well as the Tennessee Hope Scholarship. Students who do not complete the FAFSA by this date will not be eligible for the scholarships, even if they meet the academic requirements.
The FAFSA takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. Students will need a FSA ID and their parents’ 2016 federal tax return and their return as well, if applicable, to complete the FAFSA.
