Community Town Hall Forum set for Mt. Pisgah CME

The closing of the Kroger store in Orange Mound, the impact of MLK50 and a push for voter registration are all on the agenda of the Community Town Hall Forum set for Sunday at Mt. Pisgah CME Church at 2490 Park Ave.

The forum is being hosted by the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and CME Bishop Henry Williamson Sr., presiding prelate for the First Episcopal District of the CME Church and chairman of the Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital project.

Set to begin at 5 p.m., the forum discussion will feature several elected officials and business and community leaders.

“Rev. Jackson is returning to Memphis to help bring the community together because he is a bridge builder,” Williamson said. “We want to increase voter registration and participation, including addressing healthcare, education and other critical needs affecting our community.”

Williams said the closing of the Kroger store and the Tri-State Bank branch affected and impacted the elderly population in the community.

“It cut off services to food, pharmaceutical and financial services since Tri-State Bank was housed in Kroger. We need to solve some community problems with some creative solutions.”

Jackson also will deliver greetings at Mississippi Blvd. Christian Church on Sunday, Feb. 11, during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

On Sunday afternoon, Jackson will be part of a team that will tour Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital restoration project at 409 Ayers St. The hospital is undergoing a $5 million renovation.
