This clip really needs no set up, other than this: Aalayah Eastmond, a 17-year-old at Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, called her mother during the shooting — to apologize for all her mistakes. Her mother eventually hung up the phone on her daughter. “I thought she was going to die, and I didn’t want the last words I heard from her to be ‘Please don’t shoot!”

Eastmond and her mother spoke with Megyn Kelly on “Megyn Kelly Today,” which aired this morning. The first segment is above, in which Eastmond details the first moments of the tragedy.

After a commercial break, Eastmond and her mother return to talk about how the shooting has ignited a firestorm of debate over gun control — and whether or not she’s “a crisis actor” using the tragedy for political leverage. Her mother sums it up perfectly by indicating that no one accusing her daughter of that would trade places with her for those 40 minutes she didn’t know if her daughter was alive.

And while everyone feels sad for the terrible loss of life that day, these clips drove home to me that the survivors will have mental and emotional scars to deal with. That’s the invisible toll of these tragedies — how do you put your life back together after something like this?
