National Association of Real Estate Brokers to host Homeownership for Veterans event Tuesday

WHAT: NAREB MEMPHIS, the local chapter of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) is sponsoring a “Homeownership for Veterans” event to encourage the nation’s approximately 20 million Black veterans to learn more about the homeownership process, how to use the VA homebuying benefit, and to promote homeownership as the best avenue to build wealth and long-term financial security for their families. The focus on underserved Black veterans is part of NAREB’s “Two million New Black Homeowners in Five Years (2Mn5)” initiative launched in 2016 to re-instill confidence in the homebuying marketplace among Black Americans.

WHO: The “Homeownership for Veterans” event is being hosted by NAREB MEMPHIS comprised of predominantly Black real estate practitioners representing the full spectrum of the real estate profession including: homeownership counselors, appraisers, real estate brokers and agents, title experts, mortgage lenders, legal experts, and insurance specialists. In addition, representatives of government agencies will be present to provide information about homebuying assistance programs. NAREB member Realtists will also be present to answer veterans and other consumer questions about the homebuying process and what to expect as a new homeowner.

WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017

WHERE: 6393 Poplar Ave Memphis, TN 38119 (MAAR)

Details: NAREB is returning to its root foundation which began in 1947 with 12 Black real estate professionals joining together to help returning Black WWII veterans find homes of their choice in neighborhoods of their choosing when discriminatory housing practices were prevalent. Today, Black American homeownership has dwindled from a high of nearly 49% in 2004 to just over 42 percent. In comparison, the current homeownership rate for non-Hispanic whites is just above 72 percent. NAREB’s research indicates that Black Americans are still reluctant to enter the real estate market and need additional assurances that homeownership is the best wealth building tool. Anecdotal as well as factual reports indicate that Black Americans bore the brunt of the major economic downturn that stripped away home equity. Events like the Homeownership for Veterans help prospective Black American homebuyers make informed decisions.
