White House director of rapid responseAndy Hemming‘s job is to find positive news stories about President Donald Trump, and he gets paid $89,000 to do it.

While many have been critical of not only the role itself but of Hemming’s paycheck, others in the Trump administration have defended it as necessary.

“It’s an important role,” former Trump spokesman Jason Miller told Politico. “There’s so much good news that’s coming out of this administration, that we have to continue pushing all of these positive messages ourselves to remind people there’s a lot going on.”

“Andy does an incredible job of finding those hidden gems and trying to amplify those positive messages,” said press secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders. “He’s quick and I would say he has a very good pulse on what’s hot, but also on what wasn’t hot but should be.”

The president has been plagued by scandals surrounding everything from the handling of his staff to the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He has often taken to Twitter to dispute negative reports about himself and is also known for praising Fox News for their positive coverage of him.

But paying a staffer specifically to stroke his own ego using taxpayer money, many feel, is just too far.
