Cohen praises $71 million for Lamar Ave. improvements

U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen is praising the U.S. Department of Transportation’s decision to grant $71 million to Memphis, Tennessee, for repairs to an important commercial road.

Cohen said the Infrastructure For Rebuilding America grant will go toward improvements to the Lamar Avenue intermodal freight corridor. Lamar Avenue cuts through Memphis as it connects highways, airports, maritime ports and rail.

Officials say the highway, which runs into U.S. Highway 78 into Mississippi and Interstate 55 into Arkansas, connects businesses to national and global supply chains. It’s heavily used by trucks, and it is showing wear with damage including large potholes.

“This is a huge win for Memphis and will be a game-changer for our city and the region,” Cohen said in a statement released on his U.S. Congress website. “This project has been a priority of the business and governmental communities for my entire time in Congress. The improvements to Lamar, from the Mississippi State Line to Getwell, will facilitate truck traffic in and out of the BNSF intermodal freight facility, creating efficiencies in the movement of goods enhancing future growth and development. In a word, that means jobs.

“I am delighted to have been in a position to work with Transportation officials in bringing this major redevelopment project to the 9th Congressional District.”

The Memphis Democrat is member of the House Committee on Transportation.
