A native Memphian and Memphis College of Art graduate now living in the land of dreams (aka California), Morreco Coleman is fulfilling his artistic dreams on canvas as well as in video.
A documentary filmmaker and artist, Coleman will host a premiere showing of his second film, “1st Forgotten Champions: The Legacy of Jerry Johnson” here in Memphis as part of next week’s Centennial Birthday Celebration for longtime LeMoyne-Owen College basketball coach Jerry C. Johnson.
The premiere will be held on June 19 beginning at 6 p.m. at Malco Studio on the Square, 2105 Court Ave. Tickets are $25 and available at the door, while supplies last. For more information, call 901-270-7619.
In recognition of his 100th birthday, Coach Johnson also will be recognized by the Jerry C. Johnson Foundation with a Centennial Celebration Banquet on June 2 at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis. Now head basketball coach at the University of Memphis, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway will be keynote speaker.
Proceeds from the banquet will provide scholarships for deserving students attending LeMoyne-Owen, where Johnson worked as basketball coach for 46 years.
Film producer Coleman, who is a graduate of Fairley High School, produced his first film, “Gangsta Walking The Movie,” in 2015.
