Farewell services set for Rev. Dwight Montgomery

The home-going service for the Rev. Dr. Dwight R. Montgomery will be at Cummings Street Baptist Church at 8800 Winchester Rd. on Saturday (Sept. 23).

Mr. Montgomery, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Memphis Chapter, died last Wednesday.

Saturday’s service is set to begin at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 a.m. until the beginning of the service.

On Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., there will be a visitation at Annesdale Cherokee Baptist Church, where Rev. Montgomery served as pastor for many years. The church is located at 2960 Kimball.

Rev. Montgomery was 67.

State Black Caucus Town Hall at Block Party and Picnic for Peace

The Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators (TBCSL) will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Child Support on Saturday (Sept. 23). The meeting will be held as part of the 12th annual Block Party and Picnic for Peace.

TBCSL Chairperson Rep. Raumesh Akbari (District 91) said the Town Hall is an “opportunity for lawmakers to hear first-hand from their constituents on child support issues. This will allow us to create targeted legislation, if needed.”

State Rep. Antonio Parkinson, who is the founder and organizer of the Block Party, said, “Having dealt with serious incidents of domestic violence tragedies in our city, we feel it’s the right thing to include in our agenda this year.”

The meeting will take place at the Ed Rice Community Center, 2907 N. Watkins, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Open House on tap at the Whitehaven Tennis Center

The Whitehaven Tennis Center will have an open-house event on Friday (Sept. 22) from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the center located at 1500 Finley Rd.

The open house will feature tennis activities for ages 5 and up, with free pizza and door prizes. It will be held on the indoor courts and will happen rain or shine.

“We hope the whole family will come out and see how much fun tennis can be,” said Arnold Thompson, director of Outreach and Community Development.

There is NO CHARGE for this event. It will be a chance to learn about the different programs Tennis Memphis has to offer! Financial assistance is offered for all youth programs.

Mississippi Blvd. Christian Church to host Faith and Family Fest

Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church will host the inaugural Faith and Family Fest as their annual family gathering September 22-23. Attendees will be encouraged, challenged and inspired in a host of dynamic breakouts that will address a variety of dynamics that impact families. Breakouts range from singles, couples, divorcees, empty nesters, parenting, and more. There will also be a youth empowerment component. Guest speakers and entertainment include Pastor Bryan Carter of Dallas and Internet sensation and comedienne, Christianee “Miss Shirleen” Porter of “The Christi Show.” Saturday is designed for the “whole family will come together to experience the festival together with fun, entertainment and food.”

‘Popcorn with Pastor” rescheduled for Sept. 29 at New Olivet

The kickoff of Popcorn with Pastor, the monthly historical movie night series at The New Olivet Worship Center, located at 10000 Woodland Hills Drive in Cordova, has been reset for Sept. 29 at 6:15 p.m. Moving viewing is free Concessions will be available for any donation. Although geared primarily for children, any who want to learn American history are welcome. The host pastor is the Rev. Dr. Kenneth T.
