Shelby County DCS honors foster parents

Being a foster parent doesn’t usually involve a lot of glitz and glamour but for one night, the Shelby County Department of Children’s Services wanted its foster parents to feel special.

Last Thursday (July 19), approximately 50 foster, adoptive and kinship parents were honored with an appreciation dinner and awards as part of DCS’ “A Night with the Stars” event at Fellowship Memphis. Attendees enjoyed dinner and dessert, as well as entertainment by local performers Elite 4 and the Waller Sisters.

Several foster parent group leaders were in attendance, including Pamela Brown, president of the Foster, Adoptive Families & Friends of Memphis (FAFM).

Foster parents with children currently in the home were also gifted with duffels by the nonprofit Duffels4Kids, which provides free duffels to children in foster care.

Shelby County has 1,000-plus children in foster care and, according to Shelby County DCS, additional foster parents are always needed.

(FAFM foster parent support meetings are held every third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at Church of Christ at White Station. For more information, visit  www.facebook.com/FosterAndAdoptiveFriendsFamilyOfMemphis.)
