Central beats Melrose in season opener

High school football season is officially underway in Memphis, and among the first week highlights was a revival of an old neighborhood rivalry.

The Central High Warriors took on the Melrose Golden Wildcats at E. H. Crump last weekend. Led by new Head Coach Major Wright, the Warriors put on a dominant performance, defeating Melrose 31-6.

The Warriors’ defense was just too much for the Golden Wildcats.  Central held Melrose to just 81 passing yards and 18 rushing yards.  Most of those yards came on one play when quarterback William Mason hit Michael Holmes for a 62-yard reception – but no points.

Mason finished the game on the bench. He suffered an ankle injury late in the game, but is expected to play in Melrose’s next game. Before leaving the game with the injury Mason completed seven passes for 81 yards and two interceptions. Melrose’s only points came on a 70-yard interception run back by Brandon Moorehead.

Meanwhile, Central used the ground attack to control the game, amassing 313 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Dyland Ingram led the ground game, rusing for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

Warriors QB Sylvester Donerson completed seven passes for 121 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception.  Donerson also rushed for 58 yards. Donerson’s favorite targets were Darin Turner, who caught three passes for 80 yards and Brandon Martin, who caught a 26 yard pass for a touchdown.

After the game Major Wright feels his team has a lot of work left to do.

“If you can stop people you have a chance, but if you move the ball on offense it can’t be backwards,” Wright said. “We did that way too much.  We got a lot of things to figure out.  I like where we are defensively.”

Ron Davis, now in his second year as Melrose head coach acknowledged that his team was up against “a well-oiled machine.”

“We faced a team that is good at what they do,” Davis said. “They are a well-oiled machine that is going to get better. I am very impressed with Major Wright. He put a new system in and his kids have bought into it.”

Still, Davis applauded how hard his team played.

“Our guys fought their tails off,” Davis said. “They played against bigger guys. The score does not indicate how well our guys played.  We have things on film that we will have to correct, but by the time we get into our district play people will know who Melrose is.”

Central has a bye week and will play East High School on Aug. 31. Melrose will look to get their first win of the season when they host Kirby on Friday, Aug.24.
