Never shying away from topical social issues — or a conversation about them — the Hattiloo Theatre will host a panel discussion about the school-to-prison pipeline before the official premiere of its new play, “Pipeline.”

This Thursday, September 13, 2018, Hattiloo will host a free panel discussion about the school to prison pipeline.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Panel starts at 6 p.m. Panelists include:

  • Rob Brown, fellow with the collective.
  • Caitlin Robinson, a youth organizer with B.B. change.
  • Demetria Frank, Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law where she teaches courses in Advocacy, Federal Courts and Mass Incarceration.

After the panel discussion, attendees will be able to preview ‘Pipeline’ for just $10. “Pipeline” tells the story of Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher who is torn between her commitment to her students and her determination to give her only son, Omari, opportunities her students will never have.

When a controversial incident at his upstate private school threatens to get him expelled, Nya must confront his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away? Don’t miss this deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future–without turning her back on the community that made him who he is.

“Pipeline” runs from Sept. 14 through Oct. 7.
