MEMPHIS MADNESS: Givens and Williams mum about special guests for hoops celebration

The University of Memphis plans to kickoff its 2018 basketball season on a high note as many will be celebrating the first year return of Penny Hardaway as head coach at the FedExForum this Thursday during Memphis Madness.

Rumors are swirling about of who will be in attendance and who will be performing. And while there are many expectations, CGI Entertainment CEO/Owner Curtis Givens and Artemis “Peppa Mouth of the South” Williams guarantee this year’s event will be one that the city will never forget.

Known throughout the Memphis community and music industry, the pair of local powerhouses were extremely excited to produce and coordinate the now sold-out event.

“Coach Hardaway is a personal friend of ours, so he recommended us for this event,” Givens said. “This has been such a smooth process, working alongside one of my best friends of 30 years. We’re extremely thankful for Coach Hardaway as well as the U of M staff for allowing us to use our expertise on such an exciting event.”

Starting with the “Blue Carpet Experience” at 5 p.m., the plaza at FedExForum will be jumping with live entertainment, prizes and other outside family activities.

“That part of the event, I would say is the ‘warm-up,’ Givens said. “By 7 p.m., the madness will be real.”

Rumored to take the stage are global music stars like Drake and Justin Timberlake, as well as hip-hop star Moneybagg Yo. Givens and Williams would neither confirm nor deny. “You’ll just have to see,” Givens said with a smile.

“Be prepared to be showered with tons of Memphis love,” added Williams. “I’m certain this show will be talked about for years to come.”

Either way, students are excited.

“Regardless of who’s there, I just can’t wait to see what Coach P. is going to do for the team,” said U of M student Jasmine Thompson. “It’s such an exciting year for the U of M campus and I can’t wait to see what’s in store. Go Tigers!”
