Since late last week, meteorologists across all Mid-South stations have been telling us to make indoor plans for Halloween night, because a cold front will be bringing in awful, horrible, very bad trick-or-treating weather.
Well, here’s an indoor plan you should check out . . . and you can even do it before going to whatever Halloween party or playdate you were planning to attend.
UPTheVote901 is hosting a “Surprise Block Party” from 3-7 p.m. on Halloween to help boost voter turnout in one of Memphis’ least engaged neighborhoods. From their event page:
For the past several elections, First Baptist Broad has been the lowest turnout precinct in Shelby County. #UPTheVote901 has accepted the challenge to increase turnout at that location. To that end, on Wednesday, October 31st, #UPTheVote901 will host a surprise early voting block party from 3pm to 7pm specifically targeting registered voters in the Binghampton area. During this time, we will engage voters, verifying their registration status and providing them with rides to the nearest polling location (Greater Lewis Street Baptist Church, 152 E. Parkway N., 38104).
This event will include free food, music and live performances, prominent community leaders and organizations, and more. We are looking to build on the momentum we’ve helped create as we have seen an increase in turnout in the May County Primary, the August County General/Federal Primary, and currently have already surpassed the total turnout from the 2014 midterms. But our work is not done.
We are committed to getting more political power to more people – especially in under-resourced, disinvested and disengaged neighborhoods.
This surprise block party is also a prelude to our election day block party which will be held on November 6th, 2018 from 3pm-7pm at Christ Missionary Baptist Church, 480-494 S. Parkway E, 38106).
