MLK50 faith leaders to launch Moral Mondays initiative

MLK50 faith leaders will launch the Moral Mondays in Memphis series at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church on Oct. 16.

As part of the National Civil Rights Museum’s MLK50 Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Moral Mondays in Memphis is inspired by Dr. King’s work on behalf of poor people and the work of the New Poor People’s Campaign being organized nationally by Repairers of the Breach.

Spearheaded by the Museum’s National MLK50 Clergy Executive Committee, Moral Mondays in Memphis is a three-part series of clergy-led gatherings featuring distinguished speakers and guided table talks on social justice issues. The kickoff session is set for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The featured speaker is the Rev. Dr. William Barber II, pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, N.C. Barber is the president and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and architect of Moral Mondays in North Carolina.

“The intent of Moral Mondays is coming together to explore the deep connections between shared religious faith traditions and the moral values of justice, fairness and the elimination of poverty, racism and extreme militarism,” said Dr. Alvin O’Neal Jackson, chair of the Museum’s National MLK50 Clergy Executive Committee.

Jackson and a spectrum of faith leaders shared a stage at the National Civil Rights Museum as the series was announced on Thursday.

Moral Mondays are also scheduled for:

* January 22, 2018 at Hope Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. James Forbes Jr., senior minister emeritus of Riverside Church in New York City.

* March 12, 2018 at Temple Israel with the Rev. Traci Blackmon, executive minister of Justice & Witness Ministries, United Church of Christ.
