LENS & LINES: My birthday with En Vogue and Stokley

I wasn’t even thinking about taking photos.

I am one of the photojournalists for The New Tri-State Defender newspaper and happened to be celebrating my 65th birthday. I purchased tickets to see En Vogue and Stokley, former lead singer of Mint Condition, at Horseshoe Casino in Tunica.

The only reason I brought my camera was to take pictures of myself for my birthday but that instinct of a photojournalist kicked in and the rest is a story about these phenomenal artists and how they put on a great show.

I guess I feel like a junkie when I have a camera in my hands because I have to shoot, especially when I find something as amazing and good as these two artists performed.

Stokley performed medleys by Prince, Morris Day and the Time, Rick James and, of course, hits by Mint Condition and his hit song, “Level.” This man can sing, dance and be just a complete showman. I didn’t like when he first left Mint Condition but I have to say he held his own.

Next up was the headliner, En Vogue. What can I say, they combine talent, beauty, harmony and showmanship in one package. Singing hits like “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” “Free Your Mind,” “Whatta Man” duet with Salt-N-Pepa and many more hits.

It was truly a birthday experience of a lifetime.
