TSDRadio Podcast: Tami Sawyer’s first interview as a Memphis mayoral candidate

District 7 Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer chose to announce her decision to run for mayor of Memphis first in The New Tri-State Defender last week.

Since then, Sawyer has formally unveiled her candidacy at Makeda’s Cookies’ downtown and followed that with a rally at historic Clayborn Temple on Saturday.

With incumbent Jim Strickland having declared for a second term and former mayor Dr. Willie W. Herenton asking voters to elect him for a sixth time, Sawyer’s entry raises the profile on a race that already had plenty of intrigue. No woman has ever been elected mayor of Memphis.

Lesser knowns who have said they are running include Pam Moses and Lemichael Wilson.

Sawyer shared her intention to seek the mayor’s position during a conversation with TSD Associate Publisher/Executive Editor Karanja A. Ajanaku, host of “Where Do We Go From Here?” That exchange is the subject of this TSDRadio podcast.
