The 100 Black Men of Memphis establish Memorial Scholarship for one of its own

Bernal E. Smith II was inextricably interwoven with The 100 Black of Men of Memphis, which now has established a memorial fund in his honor.

Smith, publisher of The New Tri-State Defender, died Sunday at age 45. He was president of the 100 from 2003-2011.

The Bernal E. Smith II Memorial Fund is designated for graduating, African American high school students pursuing bachelor degrees in business, communications or journalism and attending any Memphis-area college or university.

“It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our past President and Tri-State Defender Publisher, Bernal E. Smith II. Bernal was a valued member of the100 Black Men of Memphis since 1997, and served as our esteemed president from 2003-2011,” said Ron Redwing, president of the 100 Memphis chapter.

“Additionally, he was a founding board member of the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences Charter School, established by the 100 Black Men of Memphis in 2003.”

The home-going service for Smith is set for noon on Friday (Oct. 27) at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church-Westwood at 620 Parkrose. Visitation is Thursday (Oct. 26) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Entombment will be in Forrest Hill Cemetery on Elvis Presley Blvd.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The Bernal E. Smith II Memorial Fund.
