A Florida mother faces a child abuse charge after she posted a Facebook video of herself putting her 1-year-old daughter face-to-face with a red snake, which she allowed to bite her child.

The video was sent to the State Attorney’s Office, and the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident before determining that the fact that the mother had purposefully allowed the snake to strike her child was grounds for the child abuse charge.

The mother, however, insisted that she was simply trying to teach her daughter not to be afraid of the snake and that she had done nothing wrong.

“It had bitten me and my son and didn’t leave a mark, several times,” she said. “So, I thought it was a good opportunity to introduce her without actually getting hurt.”

“People are too sensitive,” she added. “They just think that I hurt my child intentionally. The people that know me know that I would never hurt my children.”

She added that the little girl was not hurt, just scared by the snake.

“His teeth are too small to actually puncture the skin,” the mother told ABC Action News reporter Ryan Smith. “So he’s very harmless.”

She said that she learned how to handle animals from her father, who was a police officer and who had been on animal service calls. She believes that her methods work to teach her children about the wildlife.

“She’s not scared of snakes but she doesn’t want to touch them, either. That was my goal,” she said.
