The new Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me, released on what would have been the rapper’s 46th birthday, came in third place at the box office this weekend behind Wonder Woman and Cars 3.

Directed by Benny Boom, and starring Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Shakur, the film grossed $27.1 million from 2,471 theaters, surpassing expectations, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Being that this is Pac, unsurprisingly, half of the audience was black (52 percent), followed by whites (22 percent), Hispanics (19 percent) and others.

Despite being panned critically, including by the real life Jada Pinkett Smith, portrayed by Kat Graham in Eyez, if current numbers hold steady, the film could be on its way to box office success.
