Iowa woman pleads guilty to voting for Trump twice

An Iowa woman pleaded guilty to trying to vote for Donald Trump twice during the 2016 election, claiming that she believed Trump’s claims that the election was rigged and was convinced that her first ballot would be flipped to count toward Hillary Clinton‘s voter tally.

Terri Lynn Rote pleaded guilty to election misconduct on June 27, and a judge has scheduled her sentencing to take place on Aug. 15, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors agreed to drop the charge of perjury against her.

Rote, who is registered as a Republican in Des Moines, Iowa, tried to vote a second time at a Polk County election satellite office while early voting was going on for the 2016 presidential election, believing that the first time would not reflect her voting preference. Although Rote’s court-appointed attorney initially argued her client’s “significant mental deficits” and “cognitive limitations,” a judge ruled in May that she was fit to stand trial.

The felony crime of election misconduct could see Rote sentenced to up to five years in prison, though lawyers have reportedly recommended instead that her sentence be suspended and that she instead be required to serve probation, community service and a fine.
