Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Observes 110th Founders’ Day

With Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated set to observe the 110th year of its founding, Memphis’ Beta Epsilon Omega Chapter will mark the milestone with a Founders’ Day service on Saturday, January 20, at noon at First Baptist Church-Broad.

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, former mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, will be the keynote speaker.

The event’s theme is Cultured Pearls United in Service and Social Action and will include special award presentations to local social justice activist Tami Sawyer and National Civil Rights Museum president Terri Lee Freeman, along with Deidre Malone, NAACP president, State Rep. Barbara Cooper and Memphis City Councilwoman Jamita Swearengen.

All of the honorees are members of the sorority and each is an established leader in social justice and community action.

“This is an exciting year for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and we’re proud to include these distinguished women in our Founders’ Day service,” said Teleesa Payne Mason, president of the Beta Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

“They each epitomize AKA’s commitment to service and social justice and it’s important that we recognize their efforts during this important milestone year for our organization.”

The chapter also plans to fulfill the sorority’s mission “to be of service to all mankind,” by accepting donations of winter coats, scarves, hats, gloves, ear muffs, and socks that will be donated to the Neighborhood Christian Centers in Memphis.

Beta Epsilon Omega was chartered in 1934 and has 550 active members.  It was the first AKA chapter to be chartered in Memphis and the 55th graduate chapter established in the United States.
