Beale Street Procession for Preston Shannon

In a note of respect, a procession made its way along Beale Street on Friday, passing through the entertainment district that bluesman Preston Shannon punctuated with talent and professional dignity.

Shannon, 70, died on Monday, succumbing to a bout with cancer.

Shannon’s funeral was set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Church of God in Christ, 7491 Hacks Cross Road, with visitation an hour before. The Beale Street procession preceded an afternoon-early evening visitation at R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home at 2944 Walnut Grove Rd.

As the cars bearing his body and family passed B.B. King’s Blues Club, several of the many musicians that had played alongside Shannon tipped their hats and horns for the master guitar man with the Mississippi-blues-rooted voice.

The talent he honed and displayed for decades earned him a star on the Beale Street Brass Note Walk of Fame.
