James Wiseman named AAC Freshman of the Week

James Wiseman has been named Freshman of the Week for the American Athletic Conference.

From the University of Memphis’ athletics site gotigersgo.com:

Wiseman was named the league’s Freshman of the Week for his performances last week against South Carolina State and UIC. In those games, he had 45 points, 20 rebounds and eight blocks. He also was 15-of-18 shooting.

In the UofM’s 97-64 victory over South Carolina State, Wiseman had 28 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes. He connected on 11-of-14 field goals and made 6-of-7 free throws.

In the Tigers’ 92-46 win over UIC, Wiseman nearly posted another double-double. He finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. He made each of his four field goal tries against UIC.

Additionally, Wiseman was named the Lute Olson National Player of the Week and the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. CSM identifies the players who have had the greatest impact to their team from each conference – and on a national basis – each Monday.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Wiseman was also named Lute Olson National Player of the Week.

Fans can be forgiven for feeling the honors are surreal, given the legal drama that exploded Friday around Wiseman’s NCAA eligibility — you can read more about that here. Also, you can check out our coverage of the Tigers’ victories over South Carolina State as well as the University of Illinois-Chicago.

The Tigers play the Oregon Ducks tonight at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be on ESPN.
