SNEAK PEEK: ‘Cloak & Dagger’ is a teen superhero film worth watching

It’s almost time for Cloak & Dagger to premiere on Freeform and we’ve got a sneak peek at the superhero series that’s darker than we expected.

There are tons of reasons to tune in to this teen-angst-ridden tale of two superheroes. The first episode of the series was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, Beyond The Lights). The mere fact that she touched this project makes it worthy of a watch, but strong performances and a mysterious, gritty tone sets it apart from typical comic-based series.

Another plus? It stars a black superhero. Aubrey Joseph takes the lead as Tyrone Johnson (Cloak) and he’s mesmerizing to watch. He and his soon-to-be partner in crime Tandy Bowen aka Dagger (Olivia Holt).

These two are connected in more ways than one and their story starts on a stormy night when both of their lives change forever.  When they reconnect years later, they ignite each other’s powers and set the tone for a season of deep, dark, brooding and unexpected surprises.

Two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Aside from the cool and creative ways Cloak & Dagger manages to unravel this beloved tale with cool camera tricks and unique powers, it also manages to weave a compelling story that’s more powerful than typical teen dramas.

Freeform seems like the perfect home for this show and we’re hoping Grownish fans will tune in for a treat while they wait for Yara Shahidi and her crew to return to campus.

Check out the sneak peek:

Cloak & Dagger premieres Thursday, June 7 at 8/7c on Freeform.
