Southwest and CodeCrew team up for software developer bootcamp

CodeCrew and Southwest Workforce & Community Solutions have partnered to offer a six-month, 40-hour per week software developer bootcamp beginning Feb. 3 at Southwest Tennessee Community College’s downtown campus at 737 Union Ave.

Code School is designed to empower adults to become tech innovators and leaders with employment in the industry as a key objective of the program.

“Coding bootcamps are increasingly popular as an alternative pathway to software engineering careers in cities around the country,” said Meka Egwuekwe, CodeCrew executive director, “Until CodeCrew, Memphis was the largest city in the country without a full-time coding bootcamp.”

CodeCrew launched Code School in July 2018, the first full-time coding bootcamp in Memphis. Students work in small classroom settings and use real-world technologies to learn the fundamentals of coding and software development.

The program also helps participants develop essential skills and leadership training to help graduates find work.

“Today, adults who are often overlooked for opportunities in software careers are not only getting high-quality training in this lucrative field, they are also helping to fill the overwhelming demand from employers,” Egwuekwe said. “We believe this newly skilled talent is transformative for Memphis.”

Code School students will learn various programming languages such as Python/Django, C Sharp and JavaScript. They’ll also learn front-end development with HTML/CSS, back-end development, relational and non-relational databases and more advanced concepts that include Web APIs.

Up to 18 credit hours toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in programming is available to CodeCrew graduates once they enroll as students at Southwest.

Tuition for the program is $12,600 and can be paid in increments. Students may sign an income share agreement and work through a payment plan after employment is attained.

Applications are open through Jan. 17. Applicants must complete an in-person interview and attend an open house to be considered for admission. Anyone seeking to nominate a potential student should visit the website and complete a nomination form.

Individuals with at least a GED or high school diploma are eligible to apply online at http://code-crew.org/codeschool. For more info, contact [email protected] or (901) 229-1720.
