SWCC women’s basketball team aims to be a reckoning force for the 2019/2020 season

Southwest Community College women’s basketball team is not the first thing that comes to mind when someone in Memphis mentions basketball, but the team is hoping to change that with unstoppable performances that will gain attention.

Lady Saluqis head coach Andrea Martre has been at the helm for 23 seasons and believes the city needs to rally around SWCC.

“We are doing the same things the other colleges are doing but I think we get lost amongst the four-year colleges in the city,” she said. “I believe in supporting all the entities in the city.”

SWCC is off to a productive start having two wins under their belt against Arkansas Baptist (74-73) and National Park (67-54). Their only loss for the season was against ASU Mid-South (70-68).

Coach Martre highlighted some of the errors that need to be worked on.

“We have to defend better, we have to communicate more on the floor be a little more aggressive and more assertive,” she said.

Coach Martre is optimistic for the entire 2019-20 season.

“We have a really young new team,” she said. “Once they learn my system and all the things we talk about . . . I can see progress. Right now, we are  still in the learning stages so hopefully, we don’t make too many mistakes in this process.”

SWCC’s next home game is Saturday Nov.16 against Chattanooga State. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
