The New Olivet to usher in aviation career info session

by Michelle Wilson Bradley, Special to The New Tri-State Defender

The New Olivet Worship Center, 10000 Woodland Hills Dr. in Cordova will host its first career information session on aviation at the church on July 24 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The free event is open to all ages and will feature career information given by Cindy Sartain, manager of FedEx Pilot Recruitment. She will give an overview of qualifications required for a crewmember position at the company and other aviation career opportunities.

“I am going to show a short video, speak (to attendees) about job opportunities at FedEx and other airlines,” Sartain said.

The event is an information session; not a hiring expo.

Marilyn Johnson, a human resources assistant at FedEx and a member of New Olivet, coordinated the event. She projects a crowd of about 1,000 participants.

“This is our first community outreach event. I wanted to bring awareness to the African-American community about the aviation field,” Johnson said.

“Our targets are those in high school, middle school, college and even those 55 years of age. I want them to know about grants and scholarships available (to them).”
If the first session is a success, look for more.

“At the event, attendees can learn resume building skills. This can be a help to those already in careers, who are considering switching careers,” Johnson said.

Sartain said there also will be information given on the Purple Runway Program, a feeder program that serves as a pathway to career opportunities.

The Rev. Kenneth T. Whalum Jr. is the host pastor.
