Trustee David Lenoir steps into county mayor’s race

Convinced that myriad personal and professional experiences have readied him to become Shelby County Mayor, David Lenoir has announced his candidacy.

The Shelby County Trustee formally detailed his attentions to seek the Republican Party nomination from the Poplar Ave. office of Crye-Leike Realtors on Oct. 5.

Early voting for the GOP Primary kicks off in April. Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland, who represents Millington, thinks he is the best candidate for the office and has set out to get the nomination. Juvenile Court Clerk Joy Touliatos is a third officeholder seeking the position.

Lenoir has served as Trustee for seven years. In a written outreach extended to friends and supporters this week, Lenoir reflects on his stint as the county’s banker, noting that he has worked closely with Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell Jr. to “weather the worst real estate recession we’ve ever seen.”

That effort, he asserts, has resulted in regained financial footing by reducing debt while also bolstering the so-called rainy day fund.

Painting a picture of his background, Lenoir touts growing up here, starting a lawn business in high school, playing football in the SEC, marrying his high school sweet and partnering to raise two sons.

“I had a successful 20-year career giving financial advice to individuals and small business owners, and implemented outreach programs as your Trustee to address the underlying financial issues facing so many in our community,” said.

Bottom line: All of the experiences has prepared him to be the next county mayor, he said.

“As your Mayor, I will make great jobs, great schools, safe streets and more money in your pocket my priorities,” Lenoir said.

“I am who I am today because of the value of hard work instilled in me by my parents, whom I watched start, struggle with, and nurture a small business, and because of the unwavering support of my wife and two boys.”

On the Democratic Party side, the field for the nomination include from Shelby County Commissioner Sidney Chism and state Sen. Lee Harris, who has said he will not seek reelection as District 29’s representative.
