‘Mother Jean’ Davis Bowen – A tribute to a devoted mother

by Tyrone P. Easley, Special to The New Tri-State Defender

This is a tribute to Mrs. Jean Davis Bowen, mother of Tyrone, Julia, Effie, John Jr., Dewayne, Jack Maurice and Annette; seven children who loved her dearly. She passed last week.

“Mother Jean” raised us from Beale St. to the Foote Homes to the Cleaborn Homes and finally to 1028 Cummings St.

Affectionately known as “Mother Jean,” Mrs. Jean Davis Bowen raised seven children, endeavoring throughout to keep them close. (Photo courtesy of Tyrone P. Easley)

She worked for Memphis City Schools and insisted that we attended church each and every Sunday at Progressive Baptist Church, 394 Vance, where the Rev. O. C. Collins Sr. served as pastor.

A solid foundation – that’s what “Mother Jean” instilled in us. We will miss her, always remembering her devotion to us collectively and as individuals.

She lived a long, precious life, with much of it reflecting her desire and commitment to keep us close together. May the Lord continue to watch over you.

Farewell “Mother Jean” from your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday (July 5) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Ford Funeral Home on Parkway, with the homegoing service there on Friday at noon. Burial will be at Pilgrim Rest Cemetery.
