The annual multi-day affair known as Curtis Givens’ Can I Live Weekend turns 20 this year, giving its namesake even more of an incentive to make it a crowd-pleaser.

“This year is really special to me,” Givens said in a conversation with The New Tri-State Defender. “Especially since last year’s celebration was canceled due to COVID. … (B)eing able to bounce back after such a trying time is a blessing.

“And just being around for 20 (years) alone is definitely worth celebrating.”

Givens’ events have become must-see affairs in the Memphis nightlife/entertainment industry over the last 20 years. This year, he’s cranking it up a notch by celebrating his success while praising others that are paving the way in the Bluff City.

Already sold out, “The Power 30” will salute some of Memphis’ finest during a 9 p.m.-1 p.m. setting at the Hyatt Civic Center on Friday night (July 16).

“From (SCS) Supt. Joris Ray, State Rep. London Lamar and Judge Yolanda Knight-Burns, I wanted to recognize a lot of the Black excellence in the city because they do so much,” said Givens.

“I’ll also be recognizing and highlighting a few entrepreneurs as well because they deserve the credit … and I would like to honor them for what they do.”

The 20th Annual All White Affair will be staged at Mud Island from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on. Hosted by Kenny Burns, the event will feature live performances from R&B singer Tank.

“You guys don’t understand how big this will be,” said Givens. “It’s going to be a great place for socialites and people alike to come out and network and have a great time. It’s in a much bigger and beautiful space. The esthetic itself is going to blow your mind. I can’t wait for everyone to come out!”

The second half of the evening will continue at Club Love at 7144 Winchester Rd. The Celebrity bash will be hosted by Memphis Grizzlies basketball star Ja Morant and others.

On Sunday (July 18), three more events will close out the weekend. The schedule features a brunch at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, a private pool party and another celebration at Club Love for “If you know you know Sundays.”

Asked who he would personally like to thank for his long-running success, Givens said, “Memphis.”

“I can’t thank Memphis enough for supporting me and all of my endeavors,” said Givens.

“I’m truly grateful to be here in the midst of it all, and ready to put my best foot forward for what the next years have to offer.”
