Costa Rica car crash takes life of Memphis businessman Mike Bowen

Mike Bowen led the city in hiring employees with criminal records and advised his administration on helping people get second chances, said Mayor Jim Strickland.

Prominent Memphis businessman Mike Bowen has been killed in a car crash in Costa Rica.

The 61-year-old Bowen died Saturday. T-Shirt Champions confirmed the death of its CEO in a tweet.

Bowen was CEO and president of Champion Awards and Apparel and graduated from Memphis State University, which is now the University of Memphis. The company was the largest local licensee for the college’s merchandise.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement that Bowen led the city in hiring employees with criminal records and advised his administration on helping people get second chances.

Bowen is survived by his wife and two sons.
