If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

And so that may be the thinking of Kevin Durant as he announced today that he will be signing with the Golden State Warriors, ending speculation as to where his free agency option would land him.

Durant’s surprising—and epic—decision ends a weekend filled with meetings with six NBA teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat.

Durant announced his decision on The Players’ Tribune, the website started by former New York Yankee, Derek Jeter, in a blog post entitled, “My Next Chapter.” He began with the sentence, “This has been by far the most challenging few weeks in my professional life.” He continues,

The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player—as that has always steered me in the right direction,” Durant wrote. “But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth. With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to join the Golden State Warriors.”

Or maybe he just wants that ring.
