Sixteen students – over 80 percent of the Hollis F. Price Middle College High School graduating class – have committed to attend LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC).

The LOC campus is home to the high school. The students’ commitment to attend LOC represents a significant increase compared to the last few years. The average had been two to three students each year.

Opened in 2004 and a part of Shelby County Schools, Hollis Price has a dual enrollment program that allows students to jumpstart their college careers by taking classes alongside LOC students to receive up to 60 college-level credits upon graduation. Students also gain exposure to campus programs and career readiness opportunities provided by the College.

Principal Sandra Barnes considers Hollis F. Price High School a “mini-HBCU on an HBCU campus.”

Many of the students attending next fall say familiarity and community at LOC are what made the College their first choice.

“I chose LOC because I feel comfortable here,” said Kelton Porter, one of the seniors. “The faculty, staff, and students all treat me like family.”

Brittney Preyer said, “I chose LOC because of the welcoming community, family atmosphere and campus life.”

LOC President Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs said, “We are so excited to welcome these students to our historic institution. As the only HBCU in Memphis, it’s an honor to provide them with that unique experience at home as they continue their education journey with

The partnership between Hollis F. Price Middle College and LeMoyne-Owen College is nearly 20 years old.

“Our success would not be possible without LeMoyne-Owen College and the support of the current and past presidents,” Barnes said.
