Day 1 for Shelby County Schools is in the books. Parents and guardians, brothers, sisters and others designated for the role ushered students to and through school doors throughout the city.

They were met by teachers and administrators ready to roll forward on the 180-day journey that constitutes the 2018-19 school year.

At several locations, the welcoming party featured community support, including ministers and policemen. Music punctuated the reception at Dunbar Elementary School in Orange Mound, with the students greeted like stars.

Once through the doors and settled into the classrooms, it was get-down-to-learning time.
