Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has received the support of 16 elected county officials on an initiative raising the pay of temporary workers to $15 per hour.
A memorandum of understanding supporting this action has been signed by the officials and the Shelby County Commission has passed a resolution in support of the wage increase.
The action builds on the combined efforts of the administration of former Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell Jr. and the previous Shelby County Commission, who increased pay of all full-time Shelby County employees to $15 per hour.
“The same reasons used to lift the wages for the full-time workers can be applied to our temporary employees,” said Harris in a media release. “This is an important statement of commitment to pay our employees, even those who are not full-time.”
The initiative will increase the pay of roughly 340 active workers and will be finalized by the end of the year.
Temporary employees include, among others, custodial workers, secretarial staff and law clerks. The pay increase will use current budget resources and will not require an amendment to the budget.
