Seven years after the swimming pool closed at the YMCA in Whitehaven, a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday for the Georgette and Cato Johnson YMCA at 4727 Elvis Presley ushered in a new day. With dignitaries galore on hand, including Gov. Bill Lee, Cato Johnson, who has supported the YMCA for years, snipped the ribbon. The new Georgette and Cato Johnson YMCA in Memphis reflects a partnership between YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South and Methodist South Hospital to replace the Davis YMCA in Whitehaven with a state-of-the-art community resource center to serve as an epicenter of healing and community wellness, with a focus on early childhood development, water safety, mental and physical health, and social service programming.
